Pearls

A Pearl is a hard object made up of calcium carbonate deposit that has collected and been formed within the soft tissue of a shelled mollusk, such as an oyster, mussel or clam.

The best quality natural pearls have been treasured as gemstones and objects of elegance for most part of available history of mankind. So much so that the word pearl has become a synonym for something very fine, rare, valuable and admirable.

For centuries, pearls have mostly been part of royal collections and affordable only by the very rich people. This rarity has resulted in some of the great research in this field and now the most elegant of them are within the reach of its admirers from all walks of life.

The most expensive pearls are created spontaneously in the wild by nature, but this type of pearl is very rare. Cultured (man made) or farmed pearls make up the majority of those that are currently sold worldwide. The saltwater pearls (i.e. the pearls from the sea) are valued much more than freshwater pearls.

Imitation pearls are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry, but their quality is generally very poor. Artificial pearls can be easily differentiated from genuine pearls.

Pearls have been cultivated and harvested primarily for use in jewelry, but they are also stitched onto lavish clothing. Crushed Pearls are also used in medicines, cosmetics, and some of the expensive paints.
